I drive a 1995 Ford ranger with the 3.0 V6. The temperature gauge usually stays right under half way. Is that the normal range? Yesterday I drove about 15 miles and I noticed while on the highway the heat gauge barely read above cold. I replaced the thermostat today and it still runs cold, though not as bad. I test drove and it hasn't gotten to the point it did yesterday but still will not get to right under the halfway mark. I was flooring it repeatedly and at wot a lot to see if i could even get it halfway. I could not. What should the temperature gauge read? I would like to note that for some reason the transmission shifted a lot smoother after I changed the thermostat. Please help, I appreciate it.

It's normal for them to read cool. My '92 reads real low.

As long as it's in the required range on the gauge I wouldn't worry. Highway driving will allow the engine to run cooler than around town. As long as you don't have a problem getting enough heat in the cab during the winter months (depending on where you live of course), I wouldn't worry.
