Re: im a little underpowered here, is this a good idea?
so i own my crappy 84 ford ranger. its the 2.8L V6
i've been thinking about trying to install a turbo or supercharger in it for the kick it needs, im not trying to get a race truck but i need more push on a day by day basis
so is this a good idea? if so, where could i find one to work with this truck?
I wouldn't add boost to the engine. You'll do a lot of things, more bad than good. Good - adding power. Bad - blowing engine without upgrading internal parts and strengthening gaskets, blowing transmission from putting too much torque through the gears, and the initial cost of a good, intercooled boost system would be worth twice the price of the truck.
As mentioned, dropping in a crate engine ($2-15K depending on options, PLUS transmission), or spending $700 and installing lower gears will help performance. If you have 30" tires or taller, I suggest going with 4.56 gears. It'll allow easy passing in overdrive, at the sacrifice of 1-2mpg highway.
