Just bought a new (used) Ranger

Hi, just bought a used 2001 Ranger XLT. Extended Cab, 4.0 litre, 4x4 Off Road Package and is a very clean truck with only 11,115 miles on it. About 8 months left on the warranty, and paid about $15,500 for it outright.

One thing that was bothersome, in Park or Neutral, the truck ran fine until I pressed the gas down and got it to about 3100 RPM, then it started cutting out on me. Flooring it made it worse. It wouldn't die, but concerned me, and the service manager said it was a "safety feature". When driving, the engine seems to have serious power, and revs past 5K without incident.

I'm just looking for verification that at least others have noticed this, and it is indeed a computer limited RPM limiter in those gears.

I've never seen a vehicle that would cut your revs in park or neutral, but I hear that these Rangers have a governor, so who knows... it's possible.

Thanks in advance,

cool Re: Just bought a new (used) Ranger

Your suspicion is correct, the computer limits the rpm in Park or Neutral. Also governs the top speed to about 94-95 mph, but like I tell people, if you want to go that fast buy a Mustang.
