Just aquired a 90 ranger 2WD ex-cab. Also just aquired an 86 Crown Vic interceptor with a 351/aod combo. Any ideas on how to make swapping the small block into the ranger go a little easier?
If you can find a copy of Off-Road Adventures magazine, there is a feature of a 4wd Ranger with a 351. It's sort of the house magazine of 4 Wheel Parts, or if they have a store near you they should have it there too. Article said he had stock exhaust manifolds because of the extra width of the 351. My guess would be that a 302 swap kit would work.

If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day. http://www.cardomain.com/id/johnnyo
The 5.0 and 5.8 Windsors have the same external dimensions, same heads, etc. No reason why it wouldn't fit. As far as I know, the 351 is just a factory stroked 302 which is why is has better low rpm torque numbers.
It would definitely be a fun swap.

The 351/5.8 is a little wider than a 302/5.0. The article I mentioned in Off-Road Adventures shows the Ranger with stock 351 manifolds, apparently headers won't fit.

Lots of good info out there. These two links show the external dimensions for the 302/351. I haven't actually measured both engines myself but considering the heads, intake, valve covers, etc. are interchangeable between the 302 and 351, they should be the same size.
