Hello All,

My Mechanic and I are suspecting that the brake proportion valve for my 1990 Ranger with rear anti-lock brakes is going bad (we've replaced the master cylinder, and front calipers and rotors). We haven't replaced the rear wheel cylinders yet. They are dry at this point.

So far, we haven't found a brake proportion valve for it. We're thinking that it is no longer being produced.

Does anyone have a suggested supplier that we can check with for this part?

Or, does anyone know if there are any non-stock replacements for this truck?

What is the problem that you're trying to fix? As for the valve, Ford calls it a Pressure metering valve too.

Hey Bert,

You're right, proportioning valve is our term, not Ford's. What's going on is that I can push the brake pedal and I feel a little stopping power, then it lessens when I push through it. Then when I get to the end of the pedal travel, the rear wheels lock.

We thought it was the master cylinder, so that's replaced. The rears look good and they lock, so we're suspecting this "pressure metering valve".

Would you agree that this is the likely suspect?

Most of the problems we've had like that are with the RABS valve. It's actually like the proportioning valve for the system. Check it out and see if that's what the problem is. You can unhook it and plug the line to it. If the brake feels good, then I'd bet that's where the problem is.
