I have a '98 Ranger 4X4, 4.0 , with 35,000 mi. When it gets warmed up and its at idle, sometiems the MAF sensor , or something near it starts making a high pitched whine that is very loud. The Tech that I go to says that it doesn't seem to impact the engine performance based up on his use of the diagosntic equipment.

Can anyone tell me what it is that causes this this strange noise, and does it mean anything other than it's very aggrevating. It goes away as soon as I give it gas and its no longer idling.

I would sure appreciate any help I can get.

sounds like maybe you could have a leak in your intake system.. but thats just an idea.. I would look around it and see if u see anything maybe use soap and water? then again i could be wrong.

Idle air control valve. IAC Valve on these engines are notorious for doing what you describe.
