Hi, I recently bought a 99 ranger. I've only filled up twice. First time I got 200 miles to the tank, this time I'm at 1/4 and only at 30 miles.. which comes out to 120 miles to the tank. I'm using regular gas, not plus or premium, but I don't have any knocking.
Is this notorious with rangers? Either way, any suggestion on what it might be?

Are you saying that you've used 1/4 of a tank in 30 miles? That really does suck because the top 1/4 usually takes longer to drain because it includes the fill neck, plus it takes a bit for the float in the sending unit to start to drop. So you're milage should actually be worse than 120 miles to the tank.
Start the truck and let it warm up. Is there black smoke coming from the tail pipe? This would indicate a "rich" condition, meaning that the engine is getting more gas than it can burn efficiently.

A bad O2 sensor or bad/dirty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor can cause this. Have a shop or dealer plug in the computer and read the codes.

If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day. http://www.cardomain.com/id/johnnyo
Never mind any black smoke coming from the exhaust. Is there any white smoke coming from the back tires when your driving? Hehehehe. Either way, better get this issue sorted before oil hits $100/barrel!!!
hey new girl... i have a 94 ranger splash and i only get bout 220 to a full tank. i have always gottin the most out of the first quarter though. it is possable that u just got bad gas. did u fiil up while the gas truck was there?
I have a 98 Ranger Splash 2.5L and mine is about the same thing. Not much better. If I use Shell Gasoline Regular I get from 240 to 260. about 20 MPG. That's not good but not that bad.
I own a 99 with a 2.5. It gets 20mpg city, 20mpg city/highway, and 25mpg highway.----ever since I bought it new. The mpg does change with the season, or if the stations change the blend. I use shell gas 90% of the time.
