I have a 1995 Ford Ranger with a 4.0 manual transmission. About 6 months ago at 109,878 miles the odometer and tripometer stopped. The speedometer still works, though. Recently, I have heard a sqealing noise when I am backing up in the morning and it sounds like it is coming from the rear differential area (at least that is where it sounds from the cab). I was going to check the fluid level in the differential, but couldn't find a port. Can anyone tell me where to find the port and any ideas about the odometer/tripometer?

On my 97 there is a plug that you remove with just a ratchet. It's on the side facing the front of the truck, top right corner.

If your diff. grease checks good, you may want to have a look at your rear brakes especially if they are drum brakes, this brake hardware at that age tends to rust away and start coming apart.

If your speedometer still works correctly but no odometer, I would suspect the problem to be in the dash

Thanks for the replies. The sqealing noise was the back brakes (I guess you should change them before 110,000 miles). Still no odometer or tripometer. Does anyone know how to get to the dash unit? Looks like it mat come out from the front. Any one know?

it does come out from the front, make sure u have all day when u go to do this, there a pain, once u get it all unbolted, it only come out just barely enough to get ya hand back there to undo everything..
