O/D Flashing on 2002 Ranger

I just got a 2002 Ranger and the transmission seems to have a problem.

The O/D light is flashing and when I try to accelerate it seems to not down shift and I can end up going in to nuetral and the engine just revs.

Any ideas of what I need to do?

You need to take it to a Dealer or a reputable transmission shop. That flashing light means trouble!

Re: O/D Flashing on 2002 Ranger

What sort of trouble?

I notice when it shifts from 1st to 2nd it is pretty rough. Like it just slams in there. Also, when the I first start the car in the morning the overdrive seems to work fine and the O/D light doesnt flash. but once it has warmed up it starts to flash.

Is this something that can be addressed by changing the Transmission fluid? (silly I know, but still worth checking).

Not worth wasting money on a "Quick Fix".

Re: O/D Flashing on 2002 Ranger

i had that same problem on my 99 ranger.what u described is exactly what mine was doing. and about a month later the trans was junk. i had to replace it. come to find out there was coolant mixed in with my trans fluid. and the coolant ate away the bonding in the clutch packs.

hmmm - in that case dropping the fluid really does sound like a good idea. It has also bee suggested as a way to see if there is anything major wrong. Once the oil is out run a magnet through it and see what surprises lurk.

Anyway, worst case - takes me an hour or so, I learn nothing but the transmission has fresh fluid. perhaps saving it for a few more months.

i agree changing the fluid and running a magnet through it is what i would do also. its not to expensive and could save u alot of money in the long run.

Re: O/D Flashing on 2002 Ranger

Try adding Lucas trans treatment in it with the filter change. That stuff is super thick!
