OBDII Code 340: How Serious?

My Dad's '01 Ranger (3 litre V6) has the OBDII error code 340: "Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction". Is this a serious problem that needs immediate attention, or something that should be fixed sooner or later, or something that can just be ignored (my Ranger's "check engine light" has been on for several years now for some obscure reason that I don't even remember now). Much thanks in advance for your help.
