I have a 1993 Ford Ranger and the Power Steering recently starting acting up. Whenever I turn the steering wheel there is a medium whining sound that comes from the engine. It makes the sound while moving and while in park. The sound only occurs when turning the wheel. Any ideas on what this might be? Thanks

Well have you checked the fluid levels on the pwr steering pump? There is a resevoir that will need to check. Check for visible leaks. If there is no visible leak it could just be as simple as an o-ring that has gone bad and is letting air in the lines. Is the steering harder? Is it groaning or just squeeling?

General rule is to check the fluid levels. I assumed that you have already, but should not have.

Replacing the pump is not that hard to do. If you have a good sense and the tools it should take about an hour or so.

Ford steering pumps are noisy. You can replace it but it's achore to get the pulley off. I don't think it's a vital problem. Check the fluid level and bleed any air out of the system. If the fluid looks and smells burnt, change it.
