i am trying to change my timing belt in my 89 ranger (2wd), 2.3L. I am having trouble removing the big bolt in the harmonic balancer. which direction are the threads? i was gonna get a piece of pipe to put on my breaker bar, but i wanna be sure that i'm turning it the right direction. i read a thing saying to put the breaker bar against the frame and hit the starter, but that didnt work. an impact wont work. i tried heating it and everything. i'm stuck. so if anybody could help me out at all i'd really appreciate it.

It's right hand thread. Keep at it.

if the engine turns clock wise viewed from the front i think it will be left hand threaded

The engine turns clockwise but it's right hand thread.

ok thanks alot. i broke 1 of my breaker bars this morning, and thought i would never get it. but i tried with another and a 3 ft piece of pipe and it came right out..

ok, so i'm having another problem now.. how do u get the harmonic balancer off? i went and got a loaner harmonic balancer remover from auto zone, and i ended up screwing their set all up.. so does anyone have an illustration of how this is supposed to work? i tried everything, and it still wasnt really moving..

ugh.. i am starting to wonder if this truck is worth all of this... but now i have another problem. i followed a family members directions to mark the belt and just put it back on without putting it all back to tdc. and it wont start now. so, i just wanna know where the timing marks are so i can check it and see if that is my problem (i really believe it is). on the camshaft i found a "notch" out of part of the inner timing cover, i am assuming that is the mark for that, please correct me if im wrong. but i havent found anything for the oil pump, does that have to be lined up to anything? and the crankshaft has to be at 12 o' clock position right?

an added note, i just went out and set the cam and crankshaft at tdc, and it still wont start. so i am assuming its something to do with the oil pump being out of time? i still dont see any marks for it. and have searched all over online looking for a location of it.
