A 3.0 is basically impossible to kill. On the other hand, not a lot of torque but it's better on gas. 4.0 has more power but uses more gas, a lot more, and the older 4.0 OHV is prone to failed head gaskets. Depends how much power you need. 4x2 or 4x4, depends again, do you get snow, do you like to off-road? In Canada I'd say 4x4 unless they keep the roads pretty clear where you are. Either tranny is good, if you tow anything you're better off with an automatic.
Check the bottom seams of the doors and tailgate for rust.
