Planning to vacation in the Northern tier States during July. Escape some of that Texas summer heat. I'm driving a 2007 Ranger standard cab 6 foot bed 3.0 v-6 Sport with 5 speed auto trans 4x2. I will be pulling a 2300 pound camper trailer. I plan to "dash" North over two long driving days and then 2 to 3 days here and there exploring mostly in SD, ND and MT. I do have the class III bolt on hitch bar. This will be my first vacation trip with the Ranger. Any comments or advice regarding towing with an auto trans will be appreciated. For one, the book says turn OD off.

If you're towing with an automatic, you may want to look into transmission coolers to prevent the transmission from overheating due to the added weight saddled onto your truck by the trailer. If you're hauling a large trailer stocked to the brim with heavy objects then this may be a necessity.

Other than that just make sure that your automatic transmission fluid is at the correct level and make sure that you don't shift into Neutral whilst going down steep hills as this may adversely affect your ability to quickly shift back into Drive should you require more throttle (i.e. evasive maneuvers).

I took a look under the hood and found My 2007 Ranger Sport has an Auto Trans Oil Cooler\radiator sitting in front of the main engine radiator and AC radiator stack. Part of the Auto Trans oil cooling cycle after the Auto Trans Oil Cooler includes piping into and out of the engine radiator before returning to the auto trans. Interesting, thought trans oil cooling was for the big rigs. Appreciate your comments and advice.
