black smoke is unburnt fuel my guess is you have a misfiring cylinder or a dead cylinder. pull your plugs and they will tell you

Re: running rough unless accelerating or coasting

should add that it is 87 runs fine till it warms up, at a cold idle it is fine. I mean you have to drive 5 or 6 mile for it to start to act up. it started out it wouldnt act up at 55 but at 70 it would, now no matter how fast you are going it does it, but the motor has to be up at operating temp,so I dont think it is a bad or misfiring cyl

well it would help to know the year and engine size. and black smoke is an indication of fuel not being burnt fully in a cylinder thus a misfire. and more then one thing can call a bad misfire.

1987 with a 2.9, auto with overdrive, northlander edition. I always thought that a misfire would be there all the time and the amount of unburnt fuel or black smoke is a solid stream like a diesel semi taking off. but only after the motor is warm and with a lever foot driving. if I am coastring or accelerating it is fine
