Yes, rebuilt units do tend to go out pretty quick. I don't believe you can even get a brand new unit for a '92 anymore.
When replacing your alternator, be sure you replace the plug as well. Most alternator rebuild houses require you to do so or they won't honor the warranty. The best thing to do is pay a bit more an alternator with the lifetime warranty so even if it does go out again, you're not paying for it.
