ticking noise 1988 Ranger 4x4

I have a 2.9l that makes a ticking sound from the oil pan. I think that it's something major like cam shaft bearings or push rod bearings caused by a bad oil pump. Its been doing it for month and i am wondering how long would my engine last if it is that problem.
