Why is the towing capacity on a stock 4.0 4x4 so much higher with auto than it is with manual? It's about 60 per cent higher (3140 manual, 5200 auto).

The clutch wont stand up to it. You wont get towing capacities near the same unless you get into the heavy duty trucks, F-250 and up. They all have heavy duty standard/automatic transmissions in them. The F-150 even has a big difference in standard v/s automatic, where the automatic again has more towing capabilities.

It's true! My last f-150 had a lower towing capacity than an auto! Thanks, Ford, for putting little wuss clutches in you trucks!

they also lower the numbers on towing on manual transmissions so that they can weed the idiots from the smart people who tow. that way the transmission will not burn out with the idiots till after the warranty is up.
