86 Tach problem

86 Tempo, 4 cylinder, automatic.
The tach needle sits at 3k rpms when car is on - the engine is obviously not running that fast at idle. If you rev it up to 1500 to 2000 rpms the needle will start to move past 3000. Occasionaly, I have seen it laid over on the right side when the car is off. Could this be a dirty connection or something?

thanks

Re: 86 Tach problem

possibly, more probably a broken gauge.
you can remove the console panel consel cover and gauges in a relatively simple manner, and swap in another gauge cluster board from another tempo but your absouloute best bet is to run an aftermarket 1.
the autos dont really need a tach anyway.
your rev limiter is set at 5500 and the car makes its max torque at 2200.
unles your trying to modify it......
