Broken Ring maybe???

I'll try to be brief. I bought this 1993 cream puff from the proverbial "Little Ole Lady from Pasadena". At the time of purchase the car had 53K on the odometer. 7K later I'm pulling into traffic and I hear a pop like a back fire but the car drives on like normal. That night I start it cold an drive about 300 yards to a convenient store and I hear a noise like a stick in a fan and when I stop oil smoke starts "whisping" out from under the hood. I drive to work on the interstate and it runs like a top but I still get the noise and smoke. I pulled the air filter out and the box had a lot of oil in it. When I take the breather cap off and a strong push of air blows out.

A mechanic ($147) told me it either has a broken piston, a broken ring or a stuck ring. Oh and he says the sound is actual combustion behind the piston towards the crankcase and I do have to say instead of a stick in the fan it does sound more like small firecrackers inside a large can. That part does make sense. But.....a stuck ring????

His suggestion is to change the oil and run it for a couple hundred miles and see what happens. Well about a hundred miles later it seems to be getting worst.

This car is cherry and I'd like to save it so I'm looking for a little advice.

Thanks

Hello and good day:

I am sorry to say this sounds more like a Crack/Broken Head Gasket!!!!

I have never heard of a Ring doing this!!! You may have Droped a Valve also.

Years ago I had a "89" Escort that Blew a Head Gasket, and It made the same noise.

Also Check your Raditor Fluid....Open up the Raditor Cap {WARNING}

Only when cold and check for a Creamy Liquid....if so you Have some type of Head Problem.

Re: Broken Ring maybe???

Thanks for the reply. Curious though, I don't see where the smoke comes into play. It definitely comes out of the air filter housing and breather cap. And I have all the zip it had before the smoke and noise. When I've had head gaskets go I get water in the oil and loss of power. I realize I can ask a lot of questions but the the bottom line is to pull the motor, strip it down and see what I'll see. Thanks again S6

Re: Broken Ring maybe???

Sorry to hear about your grief. But if you have oil in your air cleaner it is not a good sign. If you have a broken ring or bad piston you should have a lot of "blow by" which is an easy test just open the oil fill cap with the engine running and observe if you have lots of "steam" you have a ring or piston problem, usually the blow by will have a "beat" to it if its just one cylinder. The other problem you might have is a bad valve or guide which would explain the noise and in cases a bad intake valve can create a popping noise in your intake and also oil getting to your air cleaner. Either way the cylinder head would have to come off and cylinders and head should be inspected.
