check engine light

How can I turn this annoying light off? The light came on because of a bad egr valve but I replaced it (to pass the emissions test). I thought if you fix the problem, the light goes away!

Re: check engine light

You have to reset the ECU. That is a stored code.

Re: check engine light

So is resetting the ECU something I can easily do or do I need to go to a mechanic who has one of those code readers to do it.
I had heard from someone with a different car they simply unplugged the battery for a few minutes and the computer reset, thus turning the light off.

Re: check engine light

It can be done with a code reader, or you can just open the doors and disconnect the battery for about 15 minutes.

Once you do that, you want to re attach the battery, then start the car and turn most if not all electrical devices on so that the computer can start to relearn the sensor information for engine control.
