The impact switch is purely a mechanical device. The only input it reacts to is sudden rapid movement. The sudden rapid movement could be an accident, could be a pothole, it could even be a trunk lid or door slammed too hard.
It's a very simple device and a very easy thing to check. Many Tempo/Topaz owners have assumed that a non-working fuel pump was something more serious, which it could be, and were saved many hours and dollars by a simple press of the reset button.
Always start with the simple stuff. Push the button, if that doesn't clear the problem, then move on to more serious electrical diagnosis and repair.
