so.....i just bought a topaz

its a 94, 82000 miles 2.3L4cly
and it bucks wildly whenever im accelerating or i have my foot even so much as touching the pedal. i replaced the fuel filter thinking that might be the problem but it hasnt fixed it.
i am not unfamiliar with cars but i do not have much experience with ones with piston engines or fuel injection. i dont know where to start looking for the problem and i could use any advice someone has to offer

thanx, jason

Could be a simple as needing the injectors cleaned, or any number of other things. Did the car sit for awhile before you bought it?

the car will start randomly jerking... hard. really, really hard.
it was noticable enough to get me pulled over the other night, lol
its not cutting out and then coming back on, its as if you were to tap the gas pedal a few times in a row.

its gotten alot better since i ran a tank of gas with some lucas fuelinjector cleaner through it so i am inclined to belive that it may be the injectors

can the car damage itself if i continue to drive it while its doing this?

also: it idles aroun 1000rpm but it will rev up 100-200 rpm intermitantly

as for the turbo suggestion, i may do so after i install a TII13b into my rx7

Re: so.....i just bought a topaz

if you ran fuel injector cleaner and it magically cleared up, the injectors gota be horrible. id replace the fuel filter to, blow all the fuel out of that line, drain all the fuel out the rail, run alot more fuel injector cleaner like on a perscription for the car.
even think about flushing the tank.
possibly cleaning out, replacing sum injectors.
if you car jerks really bad it could be a sign of weak/broken motor mounts, espically the rear/front transaxle mounts. cheap and easy to replace.
if it suddenly drops to low rpms, make shure all sensors involving the air intake system are pluged in, theres no leaks in the vacume hosing. next up think about replacing the idle air control valve.

last, is the car an automatic and does it feel/happen as a shifting problem?

Re: so.....i just bought a topaz

Is the check engine light on?

A guess out of the blue is that the PFE sensor is bad, the EGR valve is bad, the Idle Air Controler is bad, or it could just be a vaccum line.

Here are some easy ways to check your codes if you have a check engine light.
EEC-IV Testing

And here is a list of what the codes mean:
EEC IV 3 digit codes

Re: so.....i just bought a topaz

thanks for the advice but i found the problem; faulty plug wire

i tested them with a multimeter the other morning and they all tested ok
just for the hell of it i retested them and i got an infinity reading on the #4 wire. i moved the wire when i was takning the probes off of it and all of a sudden i got a more normal reading. i thnk that it was going in and out as the car was moving and when the circuit would close i would get a jerk, it would open again and everything would seem normal. the #4 plug was also wet with fuel when the others were nice and dry.
i replaced the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor and that must have done the trick cuz it runs down around 800rpm and its really smooth

Re: so.....i just bought a topaz

ive ran castrol syntech 10w30-40 summer heat from the first day i started beating this car to death. added in 1 bottle lucas pure synthetic stablizer, and the motor loved it. even started throwing in a teaspoon or two slick 50.
ran only 91 octane chevron, i have beat the **** out of this car and for almost 3 years of the most ruthless punishment bouncing of rev limiters, 60+mph 2nd gear, horrible punnishment almost daily before i got a tac.
then just recently because i run a glasspack under the car, all my smoke at a stop or taking off comes from under the car, so did blue'ish smoke, which later turned out to be oil leaking from the valvecover gasket. I have never had a problem with the engine or componets. maxed out oil pressure 60+psi.
in 5 minuts i could beat that down to 40psi or less at redline, and run this car hard all day. Imagine dowing that on the manufacturs 5w30.
