I'm having problems getting my '92 Tempo (2.3L) to start. It just turns over and over and over and then suddenly will start. It doesn't do it every time though, sometimes it will start right up. But it has been getting worse, where I usually have to crank it for a few minutes before it will finally decide to start. It runs fine once it's started.

About a week ago I changed the water pump, radiator fan and assembly (car was overheating), serpentine belt, thermostat, and I decided to go ahead and change the fuel filter while I was at it because I wasn't sure how long it's been since it'd been changed.

Could this have something to do with the new fuel filter? because it wasn't doing this before I changed it. Well it may have done it on rare occasions before, but now it does it almost every time I try and start the vehicle, hot or cold.

Also, I changed the spark plugs, distributor cap, cables, etc. about a month ago and it wasn't doing this then.

On the occasions it doesn't start; can you hear the fuel pump priming? It could be a bad pump, relay, or wiring. Also, your '93 could have a bad ignition switch, cam position sensor or wiring, or even the module could be faulty.

Assuming the fuel pump can be heard priming when you turn the key;

Check & clean the connections on the solenoid (driver's side of the engine bay, near the battery), as well as all ground connections too. A Haynes or Chilton book can be priceless for keeping these old cars running.
