The AWD was like 87 to 91. The rear end was not up to it being turned on all the time or being used on pavement.
An escort motor can be swapped in. A Tempo is a lengthend escort platform. It should bolt up pretty easy. However most of the wiring will have to be changed in order to make it work. Plus you'd have to use the auto tranny. Not sure if it would bolt up to the 1.9 or not. I know the MTX III was used in both the Escort & the Tempo. Dunno about the auto's tho.
