I have a 90 4cyl. Tempo with a rebuilt engine but the electrical system is fried. My friend said that older rangers used the same engine but with a carburetor/different ignition system and I could swap them out then get rid of the wiring harness. He has a ranger that’s suppose to have the same engine, it looks about the same but the way it’s seated in the truck is different. I don’t have enough money to buy a new wiring harness and new ECU or used body, so I wanted to know if this was possible and how difficult it would be to replace the ignition system. I’ve swapped intake manifolds before and know a good bit about electronics. Thanks.

The 2.3 that the Ranger's used was the 2.3 OHC engine. The same as mustangs & Turbo Coupes.

The 2.3 from a Tempo is an OHV engine that's basically a 200 I6 with 2 cylinders chopped off.

In the US, 84's had a carb. Good luck getting it to work. I'd suggest going to a yard and trying to find the intake, and carb from an 84 Tempo. Or maybe an early 80's escort.
