ENGINE POWER TORQUES

The great Australian supercar war is on again. Ford is set to release a new family of potent six-cylinder and V8 engines that will be mated to its BA Falcon.

Full details will be released on Thursday.

Ford is expected to produce a straight-six cylinder engine which pushes out over 180kW and a turbo-charged six pushing out a crushing 250Kw.

It is reminiscent of 30 years ago when Australi was caught in a horsepower battle that ended when manufacturers of the time backed down on making history's most lethal production cars. These new engines may force Holden to follow suit.

The new VY commodore and BA falcon are due for release soon. End quote.

Hmm. Don't you just love the automatic implication that more power equals a less safe car?

Insted of praising ford for introducing new inovative (non-pushrod) engines, he critsises them for having too much power and compares this to the 70's

Maybe all those Ferrari's and Porsches should be banned off the road due a public safety concerns as well. Maybe soon the RAAF Hornets will be speedgun'd as well going past Salt Ash too, lol

Speed does not kill its the people who cannot judge the right speed for the correct environment does. Some people cannot even drive properly at the speed limit !

Doesn't he realise that cars have changed a hell of a lot over the last 30 years?

This topic has been talked about a lot before too, the main justifications being that

1) Cars are heavier, more power doesn't necessarily equal a faster car

2) Modern performance cars can handle the extra power - better brakes, safety

Another factor is that the most powerful cars are far more expensive these days therefore few will be on the roads. Even if they all crashed, there would be no statistically significant rise in the road toll.

And the lesser models have handling and braking to match their acceleration...

They have 275kmph CSV Corsa's and as soon as a fast Ford hits the road those wanker newspapers scream 'supercar war'. Either they want to sell newspapers or they've run out of stories.

exactly Hobbes. you can't expect the press to be all good, regardless of the quality of the vehicle. i think this sort of press is inevitable, especially during the build up to such an important release for the aussie motor industry.

for better or for worse though, the great majority of people in this country are sheep, and will follow the herd. this time i think the majority of the press is swinging more towards fords favour, and hopefully buyers will follow.
