Bathurst has claimed its first victim for 2002, with Queensland 500 winner David Besnard ruled out of the race after huge shunt this morning by co-driver Wayne Gardner. Gardner was on his out lap when he lost the Caltex Havoline Falcon coming off the end of Mountain Straight.
The car was too badly damaged to be repaired in time to race on Sunday, and its withdrawal will be confirmed at a press conference at 1pm. This is a double blow for Besnard, who will most likely not be racing for the Stone Brothers team next year.

Maybe SBR can use the ex-Caltex car they sold to Kevin Mundy and use that for the race.

Gardner blamed the higher curbs for the accident.

Skaife, Seton and Perkins said that the curbs are too dangerous on Wednesday.......they were right :dead:

On NOVA FM they say the car is repairable.

Don't count the SBR car out of the race just yet.

In 1998 the same thing happened to the Pirtek EL and it ended up winning the race so anything can happen.

Brain fade. He went backwards in the first corner after Mountain straight (Griffins Bend) and spun around and hit the front.

The team revealed afterwards that a valve used to released the front brake pressure in a pad change was accidentally knocked during the stop, meaning the car only had rear brakes.

I would be surprised if they got Mundy's car, the contract they signed won't allow them to use it for Bathurst I don't believe.

That sux really - but they should at least try, it's 2 days to race time and the TAFE kids have fixed some pretty big shunts.

Unless they get ruled out because they have only been in practice, not qualifying?

It seems strange that they wouldn't attempt to fix it.
Remember Radisich's car at Adelaide this year what an absolute mess, yet they got him on the grid.
