Ford test run
in yesterdays paper..
A HORDE of Ford fighters swooped on Queensland Raceway at Ipswich yesterday in a search for speed. Eight cars staged a mini V8 Supercar meeting as they began the build-up to the 2002 season and the battle to beat the crack Holden Racing Team.
They were testing just a week before heading south for the Foster's Australian Grand Prix meeting, then across to Adelaide a fortnight later for the Clipsal 500 which opens the touring car championship.
Yesterday's efforts were focused on a new Dunlop "control" tyre which is compulsory for all teams this year, although veteran Dick Johnson put a different spin on things when he rolled out his old Ford Sierra RS500 racer to prepare for a grand prix shootout with Peter Brock in a 1980s Commodore.
The fastest time yesterday was set by one-lap specialist and Bathurst pole winner Marcos Ambrose.
He rattled off a 1min11.3sec lap early in the day in his Pirtek Falcon and continued to make the pace for the rest of the day.
Most of the Falcons -- including Steve Ellery, Mark Larkham, Paul Radisich and David Besnard -- cracked laps in the 1:12 range, although they concentrated on the new Dunlop tyre and durability testing for the GP.
