THE Williams Formula One team wants to keep the world guessing for up to another six weeks on who will be Australian Mark Webber's teammate next year, but its engine supplier, BMW, has virtually confirmed it will be German Nick Heidfeld.

BMW motor sport director Mario Theissen said Heidfeld will not be sent home after impressive form in recent testing in Spain where he was pitted directly against the other contender for the vacancy, Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia.

"What is important is that the fastest one drives," Theissen said as German media reported that Heidfeld had signed a deal worth about €3 million ($5.27 million), a figure that would only be paid to a driver to race for a season rather than just test for a team.

Heidfeld drove for ****** in 2004 and previously raced for Sauber.

I read they have signed him but wouldn't admit if it was for a race or test seat but I can't imagine he'd leave even ****** just to test. I'd much prefer him to be driving then Pizzaboy Nick was very competitive with Kimi when they were racing together but he certainly hasn't got the breaks since.

I'd like to see Heidfeld get the job. He is a past F3000 champion and has the credentials to be in F1. He was competitive with Kimi at Sauber and deserves a break. He'll take it up to Webber as well and be a strong team mate. A win-all as far as I can see.

I've got no time for Pizzonia, got sick of him carrying on like a pork chop about Webber and Jaguar. He's suspect under pressure. He got blown away and that is that!!
