Todays news:
AMBROSE ON TOP IN OPENING V8 PRACTICE IN THE TOP END
Pirtek Racing’s Marcos Ambrose has set the fastest time in the opening practice session for this weekend’s sixth round of the 2003 V8 Supercar Championship Series at Darwin’s Hidden Valley.
Ambrose set the quickest time on his final lap in the one and only session today, to head Mark Skaife by just .0490 of a second.
Ambrose is chasing his fourth straight win of the year and Ford’s fifth in a row this weekend. The Tasmanian was delighted to head the time sheets so early in the weekend.
“If you look back over the last three races we’ve actually not been up there at the start but then worked our way into the top times as the weekend progressed,” said Ambrose.
“So to have the car so quick straight out of the box is a very encouraging start.
“We’ll not make too many changes ahead of tomorrow with the feel and balance very good.
“This weekend’s schedule is very busy with further practice, qualifying, shootout and then the opening race all tomorrow.
“In terms of winning four in a row, I’m not going to change how I approach the races. I’m very confident with the car and we will be in a position to have a real go”.
Teammate Russell Ingall in the Caltex Havoline Racing Falcon was fifth fastest and confident of going even better tomorrow.
“Recently we’ve had a bit of horror run in terms of running off the track and plenty of damaged tyres,” said Ingall.
“So fifth is very good to start and with fresh rubber for qualifying and the races, I’m confident that we can be at the pointy end come race time.
“It’s been pretty warm today and it’ll be tough tomorrow and Sunday, but I remain determined to get my first championship round win for Ford.”
Temperatures today were around 30 degrees Celsius and clear sunny skies are expected to continue for the rest of the weekend.
