The Orrcon Racing Team announced today that it has signed young talent Will Power as it’s co-driver for the VIP Queensland 500 and Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst 1000.
Speaking from Larkham Motor Sport headquarters on the Gold Coast Team Manager Adam Perry said he was delighted at the prospect of seeing Will in a V8 Supercar at the enduro’s.
" Some may see it as a gamble to put a relative rookie in the car, and we accept that element of risk, but we have already tested Will in the car at Willowbank four or five times now, and intend to give Will plenty of time in the car in the lead up to the Queensland 500 and Bathurst.
"I am pleased to say that Will has performed to a very high level in the comparatively limited time he has had in the car. Will has also shown that he can run at the pointy end in several competitive categories, and has a mature driving nature that bodes well for his ability to bring the car home.
"This team believes strongly in Will’s ability, and we certainly think he has a successful future in the sport ahead of him."
No.1 team driver Mark Larkham concurred saying "I am very pleased that our team has been able to identify and secure a young talent like Will, and I am very happy to have him alongside me at the two endurance events.
"We initially identified Will’s talent during last year’s Formula Ford championship, which I still rate as the number 1 category in the country for identifying young talent. In Formula Ford Will had several pole positions, won races, and set lap records in what amounted to a 6-7 year old car.
"Will has not only showed his talent in Formula Ford and Formula Holden but he has also shown a great deal of maturity.
"It is one thing to have raw speed, which Will no doubt has, yet it is another thing to be able to combine that speed with the ability to make smart decisions in a pressure environment. Will has proven that he has the ability to consistently win races, and equally importantly he has shown that he knows when to consolidate and bring home the points.
"On a personal note I am really looking forward to the endurance races. Our team has proven to be very competitive over a longer distance and I am looking forward to the challenges and benefits that having another driver in the team brings.
"The September to December period has been a period where this team has always come on strong in the past three seasons, and we will certainly be looking to repeat that trend this year."
As for the 23 year old from Toowoomba in Queensland, Will was very positive regarding the opportunities that joining LMS provides.
