Nascar Commentary

I know I've said it before but our guys could learn a thing or two from the Nascar Fox Commentary team.

For those who aren't familiar with this crew, the 3 man anchor team consists of a pro race commentator with 30 years experience, a multiple Winston Cup Champ and his mulitple championship winning ex crew chief, all ably supported by an ex engineer and a pit reporting team with more than 140 years of combined experience.

You simply can't make chemistry like these guys have, partly through such long working relationships (both in teams and as commentators) but partly because they genuinely have an enthusiasm for what they do that is infectious.

A case in point: this easter weekend there is no Nextel Cup race and only a Busch series race which basically means they get half the weekend off. What are they doing with this time off? Darryl Waltrip, the former driver in the crew owns a truck (pickup that is) in the Craftsman Truck Series. He's driving it himself this weekend, with fellow commentators Larry McReynolds, Jeff Hammond and Mike Lajoie all teaming up to help as Crew chief, spotter and race engineer respectively. That's what makes these guys special and you can't replace that.

Where Channel 10 could learn a trick or two is in adding the extra elements that are provided by the crew side of the equation to the experienced driver view of Cromley and the pro commentary of Bill Woods. It really does add something to the spectacle that is missing from our commentary.

The other thing that would be good to see is a bit more use of the technical side - in both Busch and cup races there are crosses during cautions to a cut away car (ironically supplied by Ford) to explain things that have been mentioned in commentary. The car is also used in the pre-race show to add a little bit more each week to the race fans knowledge base of how these cars work.

Must be enough AU's kicking around the FPV workshop that one could be made available for this purpose without giving away too many secrets??

Cheers
Russ

True, i'm sick of know-it-all crompton. They should get someone with enough experience in the sport to do expert comments.. he just sh*ts me

Re: Nascar Commentary

Russ, I agree about the commentary but I think it can be expanded to the whole Nascar telecast/race/concept.
V8 Supercars could learn so much from Nascar. It is by far the closest and most variable racing on the planet. Hell, I've seen more lead changes on a single lap that in entire V8Supercar races. Not to mention the pitcrews who can change all 4 tyres and fuel a Nascar (using a manual jack, 5 lug nuts per wheel and only enough guys to change 1 side at a time) quicker than nearly all the V8Supercar teams can do just 1 side!

Give me Nascar anyday over V8Supercars.....now if Jarrett would just get his finger out I would be even happier!

Re: Nascar Commentary

I think FPR are too busy salvaging parts from the old GSR AU's to keep their million dollar BA supercars alive...

I completely agree that having a commentary team that covers all elements of the sport is a must, and I'm sure if Ten looked hard enough they could find people out there who have the experience and ability to fill in the gaps.

It would be great if they took on more technical segments to the program. Watching the Crompton 00 Motorsport car being built was quite interesting, (although not quite as technical as it could have been) it was in depth enough to give viewers a decent glimpse of what goes into building a V8Supercar.

I think a great deal of V8Supecar fans have been too busy voicing harsh personal comments about certain commentators without giving any viable alternatives, I hope people replying to this thread refrain from personal attacks. :D

Re: Nascar Commentary

swap crompton with perkins, he has both driving and engineering experiance, doesnt have the gift of the gab though.

i enjoy watching nascar both because there is some good racing and there is always some sort of action.

but i would rather watch the v8's because there is more variety in tracks and theyre not always turning, well left anyway.

Yibbadda Yibidda or whatever that crazy mofo Waltrip says

I agree 100% the whole coverage and commentary makes NASCAR the best armchair motor-racing

Re: Nascar Commentary

The reason that I really only watch half of the season in Nascar is because halfway through the telecast is from a different company and the commentary is shit.
