NEW MCLAREN IMPRESSES AGAIN
The new McLaren MP4-19B topped the timesheets for the second day running at Jerez on Wednesday.

This time it was Pedro de la Rosa’s turn to take top spot, almost a second ahead of Williams’ Marc Gene.

Alex Wurz, in the second 19B, was third fastest. The McLaren test drivers will hand over to race drivers Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard on Thursday.

Gene undertook some pitstop practice for Williams – perhaps a pointer that he will replace Ralf Schumacher at next weekend’s French GP?

Anthony Davidson suffered a frustrating day. The Brit did just 30 laps, considerably less than all bar Cristiano da Matta, because of a telemetry problem.

Da Matta simply completed an installation lap in preparation for a full day of running on Thursday, when he will replace Ricardo Zonta.

Over at Barcelona, Ferrari’s Luca Badoer had to settle for an uncharacteristically lowly fourth place.

Giancarlo Fisichella was fastest ahead of Renault’s Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard worked on suspension, set-up and aerodynamics.

Jaguar had two drivers on duty. Mark Webber was just a fraction of a second behind Alonso while Bjorn Wirdheim was slowest of the six cars.
