CRASH ENDS THIRD NETSPACE V8 SUPERCAR RACE
A wet track contributed to a heavy crash in the third Netspace V8 Supercar Showdown at today’s Foster’s Australian Grand Prix, prompting officials to red-flag the race.
Queenslander Paul Morris emerged unscathed from his wrecked Sirromet Wines Commodore after he clipped the nose of Paul Dumbrell’s Castrol Perkins Commodore as Dumbrell recovered from an off-track excursion at Turn One on lap three.
Morris’ brand new VY-model race car speared into a concrete wall, tearing off the nose and two left-hand wheels, while Dumbrell’s car was also badly damaged.
The premature end to the race handed a second win to Caltex Havoline Ford driver Russell Ingall, who gave the new BA Falcon its first race win in yesterday’s Netspace V8 Supercar Showdown.
Second place today went to Dumbrell’s team-mate Steven Richards, who had earlier rubbed panels with Kmart Commodore driver Greg Murphy as drivers struggled for control in wet and slippery conditions.
Ford Performance Racing driver David Besnard took third place in the shortened race ahead of the Shell Helix Ford of Steven Johnson and Friday’s race winner Jason Bright in the Team Brock Betta Electrical Commodore.
Sixth place went to Rick Kelly (Kmart Racing Commodore), while Dumbrell took seventh and Morris ninth as those were the track positions they held at the end of lap two prior to the race being red-flagged.
Holden Racing Team driver and five-times Australian touring car champion Mark Skaife was classified eighth, having driven up through the field after a number of problems in the new VY Commodore in earlier races, while veteran Ford driver John Bowe rounded out the top 10 in the OzEmail Racing Falcon.
