Renault could have the final say in Mark Webber’s future in Formula One, according to the French team’s boss, Flavio Briatore.

Briatore recently revealed that Renault in fact has an option on Webber for 2005, despite the fact that the Aussie has signed a contract with his current team Jaguar that should see him driving for them until the end of the 2005 season. However, Briatore admitted that even though Renault could call on Webber at the end of next year they may choose instead to leave him at Jaguar.

"We have an option on him in 2005, so we have to decide whether to exercise this option," Briatore told Atlas F1. "We can have him back in Renault or leave him in Jaguar for another year and then bring him back. But he is ours, and he is a long term investment."

Webber has also been linked to possible move to the BMW WilliamsF1 team. The Australian is being tipped as a hot favourite to replace Juan Pablo Montoya when he leaves to join McLaren at the end of the 2004 season.

Does anyone know how Renault come to have the option on Webber.

Has he signed some sort of contract with them, or is it a verbal agreement.

I always thought it was Stoddart who got Webber into F1 and Jag got him from there.
