World Champion Michael Schumacher crushed on Thursday the Mugello track record as the Ferrari team continued preparing for the upcoming European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring circuit.

Schumacher, testing new components for the World Champions' F2002 chassis, completed a quickest lap of 1:20.943, more than half a second faster than the previous record - 1:21.690 - set by Schumacher himself earlier this season. The German covered a total of 66 laps.

Nick Heidfeld also continued working for the Sauber team at Mugello, the young German posting a quickest time of 1:24.868 after 89 laps.

"It has been a really good experience sharing the circuit with Michael Schumacher again today," said Heidfeld. "After the experience we had at Silverstone tests last week it's been good to have a dry test with stable conditions.

"The Sauber Petronas C21 has been completely reliable over the last two days, which enabled us to do a lot of productive work for future races."

Both teams will continue testing at Mugello on Friday.
