SHELL RESTRUCTURES V8 SUPERCAR SPONSORSHIP
The Shell Championship Series will have a different name in 2002 following a
decision by the Shell company not to continue as major naming rights sponsor
of the premier V8 Supercar competition.
Shell announced today that it would scale back on its V8 Supercar
sponsorship in 2002, bringing to a close it¹s successful 15-year association
as the major sponsor of the country¹s leading motorsport category.
Shell will still have a prominent role, having recently secured a new deal
that will see Shell Optimax remain as the official fuel of V8 Supercars.
Shell will also continue as major sponsor of the Dick Johnson-run Ford team.
"We are very pleased to maintain our support for the V8 series through the
provision of Shell Optimax as the official fuel of the category and as
sponsors of the Shell Helix Racing team, a partnership that will be extended
to a record 18 years by the end of the current agreement in 2004," said Ross
Brodie, General Manager of Shell Commercial Communications for the region.
Since 1987, Shell has been the major sponsor of the Shell Championship
Series (SCS) or Shell Australian Touring Car Championship (SATCC) as it was
known prior to 1999.
The decision not to continue one of the longest sports sponsorships in the
country was a complex issue for the Shell company.
"Shell Australia has undergone a major business review and the difficult
decision was made to restructure the multi-faceted sponsorship involvement
Shell has in the V8 Supercar category," said Mr Brodie.
Since recognising the potential for the championship in 1986, Shell has
played a major part in the growth of the sport and is proud of its role in
contributing to the success of what is now seen by many as the best touring
car competition anywhere in the world.
"It has been a tremendous thrill to see the category evolve to where it is
today, with a dedicated host broadcaster in Channel Ten, committed
management from Avesco and strong support from CAMs," said Mr Brodie.
"We have received tremendous support in areas of logistics, marketing, sales
and all levels of sponsorship management and we thank those people for
making the partnership such a successful one for Shell," said Mr Brodie.
Shell looks forward to a celebration of the partnership between itself and
the V8 Supercar community during this weekend¹s final round of the 2001
season at Victoria¹s Sandown Raceway.
