The rumour at conrod is that Wayne Gardner has had a big off at Bathurst and written off the #9 car. Can anyone here confirm this?

He came off at Griffins Bend (end of Mountain Straight). He is blaming the new curbs (of course). I think the car is fixable but will be unable to qualify. So they will need permission to race.

Bathurst has claimed its first victim for 2002, with Queensland 500 winner David Besnard ruled out of the race after huge shunt this morning by co-driver Wayne Gardner. Gardner was on his out lap when he lost the Caltex Havoline Falcon coming off the end of Mountain Straight.
The car was too badly damaged to be repaired in time to race on Sunday, and its withdrawal will be confirmed at a press conference at 1pm. This is a double blow for Besnard, who will most likely not be racing for the Stone Brothers team next year.

Bad day for SBR in other ways too
from v8x.com....
"Matt Coleman had a coming together with Paul Weel at the helm of the Pirtek Falcon. Weel said his heart skipped a beat and that he was not very happy: “I was going up the inside of some tosser and he just started turning in on me. I’d been flashing my lights and he just stayed on the racing line, luckily there’s not much damage.”
