2003 Land Rover Discovery

Land Rover’s new 2003 Discovery makes a showcase appearance at the British International Motor Show in Birmingham. The latest Land Rover Discovery features a new look, echoing the new Range Rover, a revised interior with new trim colours and a number of significant technical enhancements designed to improve both on- and off-road ability.

Significant Improvements
The new 2003 Discovery retains the stability, assurance and comfort conferred by its dynamic control systems such as Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) and Self Levelling Suspension (SLS) and keeps its iconic profile, but introduces other significant improvements including new front end styling inspired by the new Range Rover, revised rear light clusters and three all-new interior trim colours. Response and handling are improved by revised braking, steering and suspension systems and off-road capability is enhanced by the availability of a centre differential lock. New equipment being offered on the latest models includes rear Park Distance Control.

Proven Power Units
The new 2003 Discovery is powered either by the proven 4.0-litre 136 kW (184 bhp) V8 petrol engine or the 2.5-litre 101 kW (138 bhp) Td5 five-cylinder turbodiesel engine. The Td5 engine produces up to 340 Nm (250 lb ft) of torque at under 2,000 rpm for on-road driveability and off-road prowess. For North America only, the latest Discovery gets a 162 kW (217 bhp) 4.6-litre V8 power unit in place of the 4.0 V8. This move is to suit the unique requirements of that market.

New Styling
Like the all-new Range Rover, launched to considerable critical acclaim at the start of 2002, the new 2003 Discovery is instantly recognisable by its dynamic new Land Rover ‘family face’, dominated by twin pocket headlamps providing more light as well as a distinctive look. A new grille and a new front bumper with round foglamps complement the new headlamp arrangement. There are also visual changes at the rear with improved rear lights, the turn indicators having been relocated to the upper vertical light cluster to provide better visibility to following traffic.

New Interior Themes
The interior features three new trim colours: ‘Tundra’ green, ‘Alpaca’ beige and ‘Land Rover Black’. These colour themes give the interior a new ambience, enhancing the spacious feel of the Discovery interior that can seat up to seven occupants. Inspired by the levels of customer choice available on the new Range Rover, the new 2003 Discovery buyer may also choose a variety of colour combinations – including ‘Designer Choice’ themes. Among other improvements, changes to noise insulation and body mountings improve the refinement of the latest 2003 Discovery.

Practicality and Style
The new 2003 Discovery retains the versatile seating arrangement of previous models. Up to seven passengers can be accommodated in three rows of forward facing seating in a ‘stadium’ arrangement so that each row is higher than the one in front. This, together with the provision of high mounted ‘alpine’ lights, adds to the feeling of spaciousness – a distinctive feature of the Discovery.

Reflecting its practical nature, the new 2003 Discovery has plenty of space for oddments with a large centre console box, glove box, door bins and roof mounted stowage nets.

The level of equipment on the new 2003 Discovery reflects its practicality and ability. An intelligent, bi-level air conditioning system with Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) maintains a constant interior temperature, compensating for outside conditions and solar radiation. Rear air conditioning is also available with air vents located in the roof lining above the middle row of seats.

Several levels of in-car entertainment are available. The most advanced system, developed by harman/kardon™ incorporates a CD multichanger and has 11 speakers fed by a 320 watt amplifier. Other systems feature a single slot CD player and an in-dash satellite navigation system is also available.

The new 2003 Discovery features a revised instrument pack with revised graphics for a clearer display and a re-located fuel flap release switch. Park Distance Control (PDC) is also available giving an audible warning of obstacles when reversing.

To complement the styling of the new 2003 Discovery, a range of newly-designed alloy wheels is available. Further personalisation can be achieved using a range of specially developed accessories including an 18 inch, two piece alloy wheel, luggage carrier, driving lamps and mats to protect the interior.

Off-Road Capability
The revised profile of the new front bumper not only refreshes the styling of the new Discovery but also improves its cross-country agility with an improved step height. The availability of a locking centre differential option further enhances its capability in extreme off-road conditions. The latest models retain four-wheel Electronic Traction Control (ETC) and the Queen’s Award-winning Hill Descent Control (HDC) system. These features, embodying more than 50 years of Land Rover 4x4 experience, give the Discovery supreme confidence in any off-road situation.

Response and Handling Improvements
The new 2003 Discovery features a number of braking and chassis improvements. The front and rear disc brakes have been fitted with revised pads and callipers to improve response and feel while the suspension has revised locations to improve refinement. These improvements build on the Discovery’s well-proven dynamic control systems of Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) and Self Levelling Suspension (SLS). The ACE system minimises roll through bends while the air-sprung SLS system retains a level stance under all load combinations. Revisions to the steering system increase feel and precision in all conditions. This combination, allied with wide track axles and revised suspension set-up, gives the Discovery excellent handling and passenger comfort. Four-channel ABS braking with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) is fitted as standard to provide secure braking regardless of load.

Metropolis Limited Edition
While the Discovery is an out standing off-roader, the latest Metropolis limited edition signals the fact that with its command driving position, responsive engines and all-round versatility, Discovery is equally at home in the city. Java Black paintwork, complemented by chrome side protection tubes and additional driving lamps provide the right degree of urban chic while a full colour satellite navigation system with Traffic Master makes the driver feel at home on the streets. Darkened privacy glass complements the exterior finish and adds a discreet ambience to the interior. The Discovery Metropolis is available with petrol or diesel engines and is fitted with Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) as standard. Standard automatic transmission makes city driving easy and enhances control when off-road at the weekend.
