Canada:Ford Canada shuts headquarters, day shift to save power
Reuters / August 18, 2003
TORONTO (Reuters) -- Ford Motor Co. of Canada said Monday that it had cut the day production shift at its Oakville, Ontario, plant and shuttered its headquarters to save power.
About a 1,000 workers help build Ford cars during the day shift at Oakville and 600 people work at the headquarters, Ford Canada spokeswoman Lauren More told Reuters.
More said she did not know whether the day shift and the headquarters would remain shut on Tuesday.
"At this point we are taking it on a day-by-day basis," she said.
Ontario has urged big power users such as automakers and manufacturers to cut their electricity use in half as the province has inadequate power supply after the blackout Thursday that cut off electricity for 50 million people across the northeastern United States and Ontario.
