E.U.:Designer Doings: Martin Smith goes to Ford, replaced by Nesbitt
AutoWeek
We heard there might be some major churning in the automotive design world in and around the Geneva show, but no one expected this. General Motors European design leader Martin Smith is leaving for a similar position as executive director of design at Ford of Europe. Smith was one of a handful of candidates who lost out to Ed Welburn in the sweepstakes to replace Wayne Cherry as vice president of GM design Oct. 1.
Promptly following Ford’s announcement of Smith’s appointment is this: Smith’s replacement as chief designer for Opel/Vauxhall in Europe is Bryan Nesbitt, the PT Cruiser designer whom GM lured away from Chrysler in 2001. Nesbitt had been in charge of exterior designs for GM’s unibody vehicles.
