By Detroit News staff reports, Bloomberg News and wire services
FRANKFURT, Germany -- Ford Motor Co.'s European unit said it plans to increase production in the fourth quarter on the expectation that demand will pick up toward the end of the year.
"We are putting some production back into the program," said Ford spokesman Niel Golightly. "We saw demand somewhat strengthening in June and July."
The company declined to give specific figures. It plans to boost production across model lines and factories. The company adjusts production on a monthly basis. Earlier in the year, it cut production of the Mondeo model.
Ford's European unit, based in Cologne, Germany, had a pretax loss of $525 million in the first half. Martin Leach, the former president and chief operating officer of the European operations quit earlier this month.
