Anti-lock brakes (ABS) are to become a standard feature on all Ford Transits from July 2003 production.

"Introducing ABS as standard reasserts Transit's safety leadership position in the commercial vehicle market. Transit is one of the few medium commercial vehicles with a driver's airbag as standard, it also has integrated three point seat belts and excellent visibility for drivers. Transit owners can now be assured of class leading safety in addition to class leading security as standard – giving real peace of mind and making Transit the natural choice," said Steve Parker, director of commercial vehicles, Ford of Britain.

Ford Transit's braking system has large front discs and rear drums to deliver smooth, consistent braking efficiency. The addition of ABS includes electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) for added braking control. This aids vehicle control in all kinds of road surfaces and under varying vehicles loads, helps the driver to prevent accidents occurring and gives the driver confidence to handle emergency situations.
