EU approves British aid for Ford training
Reuters
BRUSSELS -- Ford Motor Co. can accept 10 million pounds ($19.22 million) of aid from Britain to train employees at its engine plant in Dagenham, Essex, the European Commission said on Wednesday.
"The training will benefit 2,000 employees and contribute significantly to the region's competitiveness," the Commission said in a statement.
Generally state aid is prohibited. But the Commission ruled that the area had relatively low income and high unemployment and the training would help prepare workers to make diesel engines, safeguarding 700 jobs for more than 12 years.
