At the core of the new Focus's appeal will be the strength of its model line-up. As well as the five-door model which the magazine has scooped, engineers have built a mini-MPV version and are working on a range of new estates, saloons and even a coupé - a spiritual successor to the much-loved Capri (photo below).

In fact, the public will see the mini-MPV first. It took a bow at the Paris Motor Show as a concept, but makes its production debut at next month's Geneva Motor Show and will be called C-MAX.

Virtually identical to the concept seen last September, it marks the blue oval's belated entry into the already packed compact MPV market. Ford is sticking to a five-seater format for the C-Max but, following widespread criticism of the Focus-based Fusion's dull interior, an insider said: "The C-Max cabin is a class act with an upmarket feel."

And the Focus platform story doesn't end there. The C1 floorpan will also underpin the Mazda 3, forthcoming Volvo V50 and even the next Land Rover Freelander. The platform's versatility means cars can also be front, rear or even four-wheel drive. And while the final engine line-up remains secret, the first units will be new 110bhp, 1.6-litre and 135bhp, 2.0-litre oil-burners built and developed by Peugeot-Citroen.
