LAS VEGAS —
Ford Combines Past and Present for Future Tuners
Ford followed the Dodge presentation with some news of its own at the SEMA show. This year marks the tenth anniversary of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) line. To celebrate, the company displayed the SVT Mustang Cobra 10th Anniversary Package. Tom Scarpello, marketing and sales manager for Ford SVT, referred to the Cobra as the team’s flagship and said it would be available next summer as a 2003 model in a limited run of only 2,003 units. A coupe and convertible will be offered in red, black or silver.

Also shown was the SVT Focus European Appearance Package that will be available in spring 2003. It features a lower performance suspension, Recaro seats with leather trim, special wheels and two color choices: Screaming Yellow and Competition Orange. It will be offered exclusively as a three-door model.

But the real show stopper was the FR100. Drag racing champion John Force unveiled this truck, which is based on a 1953 Ford F-100 that sits on a customized, high-tech chassis and uses a 5.0-liter Cammer crate engine. Based on the SVT Mustang Cobra’s 4.6-liter, four-valve engine, the FR100 delivers between 425 – 430 hp at 6,700 rpm, and 370 pounds-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Six wiring harness kits were developed in conjunction with FR100 to make the crate engine as retro-friendly as possible for vintage Mustangs, street rods or classic truck projects. The FR100 features original equipment (OE)-spec material such as a 1953 standard steel grille, a front box panel and a lower radiator grille panel. “This is the future for tuners,” said Dan Davis, director of Ford Racing Technology.

The smoothed-out body is finished in an attractive silver tone. The cab is extended 6 inches and the rear wheel wells are tubbed. The FR100 rides on a custom suspension with Brembo brakes and 18-inch BBS wheels that hide behind moon hubcaps.

The Ford SVT Focus will be available in spring 2003 in “Screaming Yellow” (shown) and “Competition Orange.”
