FORD LIFTS ITS KIMONO AT BACKGROUNDER
In a move unprecedented for the number-two automaker, Ford has brought
scores of media from around the world to its headquarters in Dearborn this week
and given them a backgrounder look at future products, powertrains and
processes. With rare exception, the company never lifts its kimono to show any
vehicle more than 12 months from launch. Why the change of heart? The inside
look, says Scheele, is partially in response to sharp criticism the automaker
has taken from analysts and media, who've fretted Ford has little product
coming in the short term, despite its promise to lead a product-driven
turnaround. "I get mad about statements that Ford has got nothing in the pipeline,"
asserts the automaker's Chief Operating Officer. "We did it to demonstrate
what we're working on and that we have real substance coming." But there's
another reason, sources suggest: to help build momentum within the company and,
by laying out a product plan and schedule, to let Ford employees know they
have to deliver when and as promised. Read more about the products Ford hopes
