NEW DELHI -- Ford Motor Co., the world's second-biggest automaker, will start selling two new models in India this year as the company seeks to boost sales in Asia's fourth-biggest automobile market.
"We have decided on all the models that we have lined up for this year," Randy Shockley, vice president of the company's Indian unit said, while unveiling a new variant of the Ikon sedan. He wouldn't give details of the models. Ford currently sells the Ikon and Mondeo sedans in the country.
General Motors Corp., the world's biggest automaker, Ford and other carmakers are planning to sell new models in Asia's third-largest economy as rising incomes and record low borrowing rates prompt consumers to buy more vehicles in a country where only six out of 1,000 own a car.
Ford plans to sell 22,000 Ikon sedans in 2003, a 47 percent increase over last year's 14,970. India's car sales rose 6 percent last year to 593,422 units, more than 30 times the number of vehicles sold in 1960.
Ford plans to introduce three new vehicles in India this year, including a sports-utility vehicle, a multi purpose van and the Ford Fusion, the Web site of the Economic times newspaper reported on Jan. 17 citing a company official it didn't identify.
