“A HUGELY DAMAGING BLOW”
“Repairing our relations with dealers is critical,” according to Ford COO Nick Scheele. The architect of the automaker’s new turnaround plan spent much of his time at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention trying to repair ties to retailers, a relationship hammered by “hugely damaging blow(s),”such as Ford’s abortive attempt to take over its network of dealerships. An internal survey showing the intense frustration dealers felt with Jac Nasser helped lead to the ouster of the former CEO. “People get deeply hurt when they think there’s some mysterious ivory tower issuing edicts like bolts of lightning which impact hundreds of thousands of people and their livelihood,” Scheele conceded. The Ford brand alone has 4,600 dealers in the U.S.
